Abstract:   (11131 Views)
JPX rocket fuel is a mixture of 1,1-dimethyl hydrazine and a nearly light hydrocarbon fuel. Regard to the presence of 1,1-dimethyl hydrazine in the fuel, emission of dimethyl hydrazine vapors in atmosphere during fuel charging can be hazardous. On the other hand, after the fuel charging, the internal surface of pipline and related equipments is wetted with the fuel. This fuel is hazardous from safety and enviromnmental viewpoint and it is necessary to neutralize the vapors and wash the related equipments with an appropriate solvent. The 5% aquous solution of ethanol was selected for the equipment washing. Varioust oxidants were compared for vapor neutralization and potassium permangenat was selected. Themolar ratio of potassium permangenat to dimethyl hydrazine was found to be 0.506. Results showed that the oxidation reaction consists of two steps: in the fist step, the potassium permangenat reduces to manganes dioxide and in the second step, manganese dioxide reduces to Mn(II) ion. Assuming the second order reactions for the fuel oxidation, the rate constants at 25°C was determined to be 6.1 lit.mol-1min-1. The main products of the oxidation reaction included formaldehyde dimethyl hydrazone, dimethyl amine, ammonia, and water. .
