Dissolving pulp is one of the important biopolymers which has a high content of alpha cellulose. In order to produce dissolving pulp, the best source is kraft wood pulp, wich can be easily supplied in the market. One of the effective methods for purifying kraft wood pulp is cold caustic extraction (CCE). in this study, to determine the optimal conditions for purifying the wood pulp with 85% alpha cellulose content to dissolving pulp with 97% alpha cellulose were done. The soda concentration is important among the influence parameter on purification of wood pulp. Soda concentration effect was studied from 70 to 420 g/L and among them the concentration of 126 g/L was chosen as the optimal concentration to production of dissolving wood pulp with 97.8% of alpha cellulose content. In all stages of testing, the products were quality controlled using different laboratory methods and equipments. These tests include determination of alpha cellulose content, viscosity value, moisture percentage, ash percentage, extraction with acetone, FT-IR, XRD and ICP spectroscopies along with DSC/TGA and SEM analysis. Finally, the prepared sample was nitrated and converted to the nitrocellulose. Comparing the experimental data of nitrocellulose from the produced dissolving wood pulp and linter was demonstrated that the produced dissolving wood pulp has a high quality. Based on the experiments, the fluffing of the dissolving wood pulp has a remarkable effect on the increasing of the nitrogen content in produced nitrocellulose.
