Azide compounds have vast applications in military and civilian industries. Some of their applications include use in drug or drug intermediate production, macro cyclic polymer production through click reaction, automobile airbag production, energetic binders such as GAP,  oxidizer, plasticizer and burning rate control additive in solid composite propellants. Due to the wide range of applications of azide compounds, the synthesis of these compounds is important. Although the SN2 reaction between alkyl halides and sodium azide is usually used for the synthesis of alkyl azides; the direct synthesis of these compounds from alcohols, which are commercially available, is more attractive. In this paper, synthesis methods and military applications of alkyl azides have been discussed.
