This research was designed in order to increase ballistic resistance of the steel armor by hardfaced coating. Welding on steel sheet was done with a hardfaced flux core of chromium-niobiom-ferro alloy and also a buffering electrode of manganese steel. After production of the coating on steel sheets, the samples were tested by the ballistic impact test. Also, microstructural, hardness, elemental and metallographic analyses were performed completely on the samples after the shot. The thickness of hardfaced coating was about 8±0.5 mm. the depth of bullet penetration was about 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm in the sample with buffer and the sample without buffer, respectively. In each of the hardfaced samples, the shot did not pass through the coated sheets. Using buffer increased the ballistic resistance of the coated sheets. By forming a hard disk coating on the steel, a profile of hardness was created from the surface of the coating to the substrate, which has an effective role in preventing the passage of the bullet by providing the appropriate toughness. The composite structure consisting of carbide and tempered martensite, which creates a hard area with the appropriate toughness in the coating, can be the best structure for a coating on steel sheet to prevent ballistic penetration of the bullet. The cracks were formed in two directions, both vertically and horizontally, at the sample surface, after the shot. These cracks were stopped inside the welded composite structure by chromium and niobium carbides. The mechanism of improving ballistic properties was to prevent crack growth at the surface of welding layer. Hardfaced welding with chromium and niobium alloys increased the ballistic property of steel plate surfaces. Hardfaced coatings can be a good alternative method for production of high-impact ballistic steels.
