In this study, the aging and deterioration mechanisms in the plastic bonded explosives (PBXs) and their components as well as standard methods for their evaluating are presented. Also, the techniques developed for the prediction of chemical lifetime and service life of PBXs will be reviewed and analyzed. These methods cite the lifetime prediction methods based on weight/energy loss by thermal analysis techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetry (TG), heat flow calorimetry (HFC), gas release in the thermal degredation processes, thermo-mechanical tests based on the time-temperature superposition principles, oxidation induction time (OIT), and accelerated aging methods. Evaluations show that the desirable methods for the estimation of lifetime of PBXs, in any particular application, are the kinetic analysis of determinant physico-mechanical, safety, chemical and performance properties in accelerated aging tests for the selected environmental conditions. Of course, the DSC and TG thermal analysis methods provide the estimated lifetime of materials based on weight or energy loss at different temperature profiles. Finally, a useful proposal is provided for estimating the chemical lifetime and service life of PBX compositions using accelerated aging and thermal analysis routes.
