In this work, we developed a fast and effective method for the determination of nitro-body compound in spent acid from trinitrotoluene production process. The developed method is based on colored reaction of nitro-body compound with sodium hydroxide in the presence of Cetylpyridinium chloride as micellar media. The effect of important parameters on absorbance of system was investigated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, at λmax= 465 nm, the linear range of determination of nitro-body was 10-400 µg mL-1 with detection limits of 5.0 µg mL-1 Relative standard deviation (RSD) for the seven replicate determinations of 100 µg mL-1 of nitro-body was 1.95%. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of nitro-body in spent acid with good recoveries ranged from 98-105 %. The interference effect of some cations, anions, and organic compounds was also tested. Therefore, the results show that the advantage of this method for determining nitro-body in spent acid from trinitrotoluene production process is the safety of the method, simplicity, inexpensive, availability and user-friendliness of the method.
