Tetralin is known as an aromatic, synthetic and energetic liquid fuel. The contact of cured rubbers with various types of fuel leads to the absorption of liquid fuel molecules and subsequent swelling of the rubber. The contact of rubber with fuel and the swelling of rubber by fuel reduces significantly mechanical properties and the life time of rubber parts. Swelling is a phenomenon under the control of the liquid absorption and its diffusion process. The solubility parameter is a thermodynamic characteristic of the solvent or fuel, whose proximity to the solubility parameters of rubber and fuel ones plays a key role in the swelling phenomenon. In this study, the solubility coefficient of tetralin fuel was determined by four methods: equilibrium swelling diagram, volumetric mass method, light refractive index, and vaporization enthalpy (MPa) 30.5^0.5. Next, the effect of diffusion and swelling by tetralin on rubber was investigated using tensile test, the loss in mechanical properties of swollen nitrile rubber compounds with filler and without filler when exposed to high-energy tetralin fuel. The decrement in the mechanical properties of swollen nitrile rubber compounds by tetralin with and without carbon black has been observed as 67% and 76% strength, 59% and 77% strain, respectively. Moreover, the loss of the breaking energy of swollen nitrile rubber by tetralin compared to its initial state at compounds containing carbon black or not is 83% and 88%, respectively.
