The antioxidant 2,2'-methylenebis(2-tert-butyl-4-methyl) phenol (A.O.2246) is one of the antioxidants used in HTPB resin. In this study, to improve the production process of the A.O.2246 antioxidant, two types of surface-active ionic liquid were first synthesized. Subsequently, the synthesized ionic liquids were characterized using FTIR and 1HNMR spectroscopies. These materials were used as replacements for the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant in the synthesis reaction of the A.O.2246 antioxidant. The effects of various parameters including solvent type, ionic liquid type and quantity, and reaction temperature on the product yield were thoroughly investigated and discussed. The reaction between 2-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and formaldehyde in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid and the surface active ionic liquid (SAIL), resulted in the synthesis of the A.O.2246 antioxidant with high efficiency (98% yield) and in a short time (20 minutes). The synthesized ionic liquids demonstrated high recoverability and reusability in the reaction. The method presented in this study for the synthesis of the A.O.2246 antioxidant offers numerous advantages, including high product yield, short reaction time, elimination of wastewater due to the removal of the SDS surfactant, reduced washing time during product separation, recoverability and reusability of the ionic liquid surfactant, the ability to perform the reaction in water as a solvent, and scalability of production.
