One of the difficulties of the liquid fuels is theirs shelf life because these fuels like other chemical materials become off spec after a period of time due to the tendency to the destructive reactions. This variation in fuel spec affects the chemical and physical properties of fuel and therefore the combustion performance. This subject is significant because of need to long time storage of fuel. For this reason, it necessary to specify the effective agents on shelf life of each fuel and increase the fuel shelf life by control or decreasing of these agents. One of the significant fuels used in missiles, is unsymmetrical dimethyl hydrazine. Studies show that oxygen, temperature, and material of fuel storage, are the effective parameters on the fuel shelf life. Regard to shelf life conditions, oxygen is the most effective agents on storage shelf life of this fuel. For this reason, the effect of oxygen on shelf life of this fuel has been investigated empirically. Results show that the shelf life of this fuel is strongly depends on oxygen and the main products of the oxidation reaction include formaldehyde dimethyl hydrazine, dimethyl amine, ammonia, and water. By assuming the zero and first order reactions for oxidation of this fuel, the rate constants of the mentioned reactions at storage temperature (25 °C) were determined to be 0.021 mol.lit-1.min-1 and 0.00023 min-1, respectively.
