Analysis of explosives is importance for quality control in the production line as well as environmental hazards. However, the current common analysis methods, in addition to complexity and need for expertise, require spending a lot of cost and time. In this study, a new quantitative method was proposed for the simultaneous determination of three explosives RDX, HMX and CL-20 in water environment by combining the colorimetric technique with a mobile phone and the statistical technique of partial least squares. The effective parameters in colorimetric method were optimized using univariate calibration and detection limits of 0.07, 0.07, and 0.10 mg/liter were obtained for RDX, HMX, and CL-20 explosives, respectively. Multivariate calibration was performed using 24 known samples in the calibration set and optimized with the cross validation model. The prediction performance of the optimized models was confirmed using 4 samples in the prediction set. The relative standard error of prediction was 3.45, 4.95, and 3.45 mg/L for RDX, HMX, and CL-20, respectively. Therefore, smartphone RGB colorimetry, combined with PLS regression, can be considered as a simple, accessible, inexpensive and acceptable sensitivity method for the simultaneous determination of the three explosives RDX, HMX and CL-20 in multicomponent mixtures.
