Dimethylaminoethyl azide (DMAZ) is a good candidate fuel for hydrazine derivatives in aerospace industries. DMAZ is synthesized via reaction of dimethyl aminoethyl hydrochloride with sodium azide in aqueous solution, which, in next step, by adding of concentrated sodium hydroxide, organic phase is separated. Therefore, the determination of amount of unextracted DMAZ in aqueous phase (wastewater) to estimate the efficiency and environmental pollution is essential. In this paper, a fast and easy approach for determination of dimethylamino ethylazide (DMAZ) in water samples was presented. The method is based on liquid-liquid extraction of DMAZ from aqueous phase and spectrophotometric determination at =283 nm. An affecting parameters determination including solvent type, amount of solvent, sodium hydroxide concentration and electrolyte concentration were studied and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration graph was linear in the range of 5.0-300 µg mL-1 with detection limit of 3.0 µg mL-1 and relative standard deviation for seven replicate determinations of DMAZ was calculated to be 2.30 %. The proposed method was applied for the determination of DMAZ in water and wastewater samples and the excellent agreement was observed between the proposed method and the gas chromatography.
